Knowing that our family will become biracial sometime this year has heightened my awareness of God’s love for ethnic diversity. I am very interested now in learning what the Bible has to say about God’s desire for unity between all types of people groups. I’m not only talking about how He wants us to live in peace and put aside hate. I’m talking about the very specific plan that is spelled out in scripture.
“God’s people” started out as one nation, Israel. But He always promised that what started in Abraham would end in God’s blessing on “every nation, tribe, & tongue.”
My dad sent me a book on Ruth this week that promises to highlight the part that racial diversity plays inside of God’s sweet “big picture” plans for those who love Him. I’ve read the first chapter and already learned that Jesus’ ancestor King David was the great grandson of a biracial marriage between Ruth and Boaz. Religious leaders would’ve frowned on this as “unclean”… but God’s plans are always more messy and more beautiful than we can ever imagine.
I can’t wait to learn more about the seemingly messy & definitely beautiful plans of our God, and how interracial unity plays a part in His story.
