So I dragged the girls into Target yesterday when Amelia clearly should’ve instead been napping. I had to do it, because I couldn’t figure out what to wear to the conference this weekend. Would it be dressy? Casual? And of course, the fact that it’s in Laguna Hills, CA made me totally fashion anxious.
I knew just what I needed.
A denim shirt. One like this nice blonde lady is wearing here:
You can dress them up, down, and be appropriate nearly anywhere. There’s a zillion and five ways to wear them. I know this to be a mathematical fact… I just did my Pinterest research because I’m so in love with the one I scored for $22 at Tar-jay.
(By the way, the denim shirt will probably become my new uniform. That is, whenever I’m not in black yoga pants. So please pretend you never read this post, and don’t comment on the shirt when you see it… You’ll see it again and again. It could get awkward.)
After putting the denim shirt in my shopping cart, I poked around in the sales racks a while. Both girls were bored to death in the shopping cart. And remember, Amelia should have been napping.
So, she did what any other bored, tired two year old would do. She burst into loud, uncontrollable sobs and began to shriek, “I want my daddy!!”
Like any humiliated parent, I scanned to see who was watching our drama. A college student was laughing. Typical. But wait. There, near the 50% off rack, was an unduly horrified woman. Her eyes bulged and mouth gaped at us. She couldn’t regain composure. Hadn’t she seen a tantrum before?
Sweet Amelia obeyed my hisses to “cut.it.out.now.” But the lady? I couldn’t shake her. No matter where I turned in the store, she was stalking us. I tried making eye contact and smiling at her, but she’d dart skittishly behind an end cap or pretend to pick up a garment.
Here’s when a light-bulb flashed in my brain.
“Oh yeah. Amelia is black. I’m white. All this lady saw was a child in a cart against her will, screaming for her daddy.”
Yeah. I’m pretty sure the lady was following us to make sure I wasn’t a kidnapper.
