I'm driving to Montgomery for my favorite night of Advent... attending Andrew Peterson's Behold the Lamb concert with my dad.
Every year, we come to this concert broken. In 2010, brokenhearted that we still hadn't brought our daughter home from Uganda. (The 2010 link is worth reading.) In 2011, praising God next to my daddy, alive, though newly scared from heart surgery and in pain from his two strokes. And this year, there is a new ache in addition to the trials my dad has carried since his surgery and strokes.
And truly, coming to this concert broken each year is perfect. This night is the most artful portrayal I've ever seen of how this world aches and breaks and hurts, all because it needs a Savior. I can joyfully join that pain, because I know how it overflows with hope and ends with redemption.
I am so thankful to be born on this side of the incarnation. I love knowing that Christ was born. I love understanding the mystery that was clouded for so many Old Testament believers -- that God would come humbly, and not mightily. That He would conquer, not by only vanquishing our sorrows, but by first bearing them Himself. He wouldn't heal all wounds until He was first wounded Himself.
And so, even though we still ache...
even though we come each year broken to this concert...
we know that what we really need is not specific resolutions to our specific sorrows.
We need the return of Jesus.
Come Jesus, come.
And thank You that You already came once.
