{1} What Are You Waiting For?

I see you there, chin in your hand, jaw clinched.
You're waiting, and it's tearing you apart.
You're waiting, and you're wondering why life doesn't fall in place sooner.

We're all waiting on something.

For pregnancy.
For adoption.
For retirement.
For love.

To be kissed.
To be noticed.
To go home.
To finally leave home.

For a job, a promotion, a raise.
For a diploma, a chance, a move, a new life phase.
For an apology, for forgiveness, for reconciliation.

For a vacation, or at least a break.
For solitude; for friendship.
For independence; for community.

For medical results.
For school results.
For an answer. For news.
For healing and wholeness.

For hope.
For a place in this world.
For your dreams.
For motivation.

For the inevitable.

For a circumstance to finally change.

The most painful part of waiting is how wasteful it feels.
There goes another year without the very thing you hoped for, right?

But God didn't design waiting to be fruitless.  He is a God of redemption.  He takes the very thing that robs our joy -- the waiting -- and He turns it into the season when we see His beautiful face.

Do you want to find God in your wait?

For the month of October,
I'm writing
about waiting...
and how to find God
between the ticks of the clock.
We will seek Him in our pain, and He will find us.

Can you help me?
I need to know what your struggle is.  Please comment or email me what it is you are waiting for.  I'll pray for you and keep your specific wait in mind as I write.

(Linking up with The Nester's challenge to write for 31 days on the same topic!)

I feel like this series is going to minister so strongly to me! I'm almost 22 and have never dated. I'm waiting on God to tell me if He's calling me to lifelong singleness. It sounds a little ridiculous, I think; I know I'm young, and I'm not trying to be pessimistic about it at all. But sometimes I just want to know if I'll be married someday, just to take a little of the anxiety away. I'm so looking forward to your series, to learning how to find God (again) in the midst of this journey.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to need your series!! What an awesome topic that so many of us impatient ones struggle with. I’m writing about 31 Days of Anonymity where I give others an opportunity to write anonymous letters to those they feel they need to. This is going to be a great month!

I.can't.wait. This is just what I need to read!

My husband was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and we are currently waiting to see whether the military is going to keep him around or not. Looking at about a year of waiting for the expected "no" but unable to do anything about it in between. perfect for a constant worrier, right?

Amazing. I can't wait to read your posts! We are currently waiting... waiting for God's dream to become a reality in our lives... waiting for a daughter... waiting for her to be rescued... just waiting and feeling helpless.

Waiting to be fully supported to get to the mission field. So much work in our waiting... it is doubly exhausting.

I am waiting for God's timing. We had a miscarriage in August and although I am not ready to be pregnant again, we are waiting on God's timing and not ours. He blessed us with a fiery little redhead almost two years ago. We would like to expand our family again but know His timing is best. Although the waiting can be hard.

I waited and waited for my little boy from S.Korea and I know all too well what that feels like. And, now I am starting all over as a single mom completely heartbroken and waiting to see what our new life will be.

For 4 years I waited to get pregnant. Now after much prayer, and a change in my heart, we are waiting to adopt. I have been a housewife our whole marriage, and now I'm applying for a job (waiting again to hear back from the employer!) to help finance our adoption. I can't wait for this blog series!

God is using you to speak words I need to hear. I'm waiting...for a baby. Infertility is an ache in my life and heart, and so I wait to see where God is leading us and what He will do.

I'm waiting for an end to physical pain (unlikely); for my husband to find a job (unlikely at age 60); for my daughter to get out of a bad relationship; for an insurance company to treat me fairly; to find a way to ease the pain of both my parents' deaths within the past year; to find meaning in my life; to hear from God. For a day with no tears.

RACHEL said...

I'm praying for each of you, often with tears. You are not alone in your wait! God is near, and we are praying.

Please, if you are reading these comments, join me in praying for those who wait.

If you need prayer, continue to email or comment and I will pray for you as well.

Waiting on God as I walk a road of broken relationship with my father. Some of my children have never met him, and of those who have, some don't remember him. I ache for him. We live a mere 30 minute-drive away, but the wall between us is seemingly immoveable. Beyond daily laying it at Jesus' feet, there's nothing I can do but wait.

Struggling on not knowing what God's plan is for me in this life.. I left a job of seven years to go to another job to find out that the company is merging and will not need my position. I though I followed all of the signs in the transition, but now I am not sure.

I am waiting to become pregnant--for my first child to be conceived. I am 38 and terrified that I have waited too long. But, before, I was waiting on a husband...

I've been waiting for almost 5 years for financial settlement from a failed marriage of 31 years. He has moved on to a new wife and continues to live in our family home with her.

RACHEL said...

Bevirlea, that sounds so painful. I am adding you to my list and praying for you with a broken heart. I pray God will restore you and be your joy in the midst of these years of heartache.

Waiting for answers to prayers we have prayed for MANY YEARS.. For our first baby (we will be married for 10 years next summer), for the answer to the question of should we adopt or is it God's plan for us to have no children, for a full time ministry position, or for more of a part time ministry position. For God's working in family situations.

found your blog through this series and I am really enjoying reading it - being challenged, letting the Lord work in my heart, letting Him heal wounds and hurts, crying out to Him.

Thank you for being a blessing!

RACHEL said...

Christina, I saw a comment from you on an earlier post and am so honored to know specifically how to pray for you. I'm adding you to my list right now. Thank you so much for being here.

Hello, just happened to come across your blog thru various other surfings about adoption....i know nothing happens by chance.....We too have been married for a bit over 10 years, and wanted children right away but quickly found out we were unable to have children on our own and felt called by God to start our adoption journey thru international adoption, that was six years ago and still waiting....recently with the foreseen continued delays we decided to send our biography to a friend of a friends law firm to be placed on the adoption waiting list and have also been contemplating if we should think about foster to has been a long road and lots of sorrow for me, I feel like such a failure, i see so many friends and family having children and we continue to wait with a heavy heart. I sometimes feel maybe it isn't meant to be and I am ready to finally put this past us and move on, but then I know there are soooo many children who need a home and we have a wonderful home and family, but yet we wait....then I am reminded of the passage in James 1 (2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.)

So Lord help me in my waiting to look towards YOU and to not lean on my own understanding but on YOURS...

Just found your blog series and I look forward to reading it!! Thank you for doing this series. I don't even know you but your last paragraph almost brought tears to my eyes and I had to comment. My husband and I are waiting to get pregnant. We've gone through many doctors visits and a few specialists to see if anything is physically wrong...they said everything is good but we have yet to get pregnant. It's a hard wait but I firmly believe that God is saying "Wait" or "No" for a reason. Sometimes it's just harder than others to live out that belief. :)

RACHEL said...

Chelle, I have been praying for you ever since I saw your comment. I love the verses you left from James. Pure truth.

Bonnie, my heart also breaks for you and I am praying RIGHT NOW that God redeem every ounce of pain (you too Chelle) by giving you Him so fully that it's all worth it.

Just found this post again and thought I would let you know that only three weeks after I commented we found out that we are expecting a precious baby next summer! We are so thrilled and praising God for His blessing. Thank you SO much for your prayers!!

I just found this series of posts on "Waiting" and I'm looking forward to reading through. My husband and I are struggling with infertility and still waiting to conceive our first child after almost three years of marriage. I KNOW in my head that God has a Plan and Purpose for us, but it doesn't make the waiting any easier. I'm hoping to draw some inspiration from your series that will help make the pain and sorrow a little easier to bear. Thank you!
