Bye Bye Blonde

I have a gorgeous Mama.

I have a gorgeous sister.

My mama taught me to apply great eye makeup, and my sister mastered the art of giving us all at-home highlights.

And while both my mother and my sister dress well and look amazing…

Growing up, I was the prissy one. The one who, at the age of 13, would no longer run to Walmart without makeup on. The one who only once ever wore tennis shoes or even flats to high school. I’m not saying I always looked GOODBut I felt good.  In my overly confident prissiness, I did things like:
  • Cut my hair like one of the Beatles – and liked it. Yikes!
  • Wore lots of… ahem… VIBRANT eyeshadow.
  • Purchased (and often wore) an electric blue hoodie covered in bright orange Japanese writing and a large cartoon monkey. We can assume that I wore this hoodie with heels. Or at least wedges. I’m still baffled that I never won best dressed.
(Note that I have stopped inserting pictures.  No, I will not be embarassing myself by providing proof of my monkey hoodie or my Beatles haircut.)

So cringe with me as I tell you that I plan to drastically change my hair color… from blonde to dark brown.  Recoil with me as we think back on some of my fashion disasters. Shudder with me as I remember my many lapses of judgment. Wonder with me whether this is another bout of my misplaced confidence.

Because while I hope dark brown hair makes me look like this...

... I can't help but shake that feeling I had growing up when I thought that "brown" was a synonym for "homely" when used to describe hair.  My mother briefly had brown hair when I was in preschool, and apparently I was disgusted by her natural color and told her that “if my hair EVER turns brown, I will dye it!” Prissy even in preschool.

I am a (bottle) blond, and with few exceptions, have been so since the days when I was yay high and a natural blonde.

But now…

I’m tired of the frequently required bottle-blonde hair upkeep.

Yet I’m too prissy to go totally natural. (My natural hair color is a totally flat, monotone, dishwater brown.)  Maybe dark brown will be a nice compromise for a lower-maintenance yet still better-than-what-nature-gave-me ‘do.

There are some gorgeous and inspiring brunettes out there.  Maybe I can become one.

Dark brown next Tuesday.

I’m scared. Are you?

As a former bottle blonde who is now a bottle brunette/redhead, I tell you life is better on the dark side. :) Can't wait to welcome you to the club!

My natural haircolor is the kind of white blonde with strawberry highlights that women pay a ridiculous amount of money for. But I'm a bottle brunette because my beautiful daughter wants something that she can say she has in common with Mommy - and since I can't claim credit to any of her genetics and at age five she's only concerned with us looking alike, I dye my hair a very dark brown.

It's grown on me and I love it. I'm sure you'll look beautiful with dark hair.

You're adorable. And I must agree with the earlier comment...now you HAVE to share the pictures of your cringe-worthy fashion day.
And to Kait (above comment): That's awesome. What a good mom!
