- 35 days after entering the hospital,
- 30 days after (surprise) complex open heart surgery,
- 28 days after a stroke,
- 26 days after contracting staph and intestinal infections,
- and now bravely travelling the difficult road to recovery.
If it were YOUR body going through such a nightmare, would you be grateful for suffering? I wouldn’t. My dad’s outlook is incredible.
How many people truly “consider it pure joy when” they “face trials of many kinds”? How many people love their Savior more than their own health, comfort, ability, freedom, and ease? It is one thing to love God above all else in theory. It is quite another to be thankful for the torrent brought by heart defects and strokes – even as you’re still IN the storm – simply because they cause you to rely on Jesus. Because you desire God’s Glory more than any good thing for yourself. Because you know the ONLY good thing for yourself is more of Him.
I’m praising God today for a dad who lives joyfully through pain, loss, and the shadows of death. I am thankfully expectant to watch his faith continue as he moves towards health and restoration.
And I am praying to someday be more like my dad.
