“Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” Mark 4:18-19
“Wealth” is a liar. Those who have it feel it’s false security, and those who don’t feel like the sky is falling. It is all a lie.
Americans are filthy rich compared to most of the world. I am not trying to point out how blessed we are. I am trying to point out how tempted we are. Mark 4:19 points out how “the deceitfulness of wealth” can choke the work of God’s Word in our lives, making us unfruitful!!!
How does wealth deceive us? I’m not sure if I can list all of the ways… A billion “if only I had’s” and a million “I really need that’s” and a thousand “we can’t afford to help them’s.”
Perhaps the most dangerous attitude is when we think that our money is our security. We have replaced “In God we Trust” with “the Almighty Dollar.” When the dollar is on our side, we’re winners. We don’t fear the future because we have the finances to support ourselves. Shoot, we may even have generosity to support others.
But when our god & security “the dollar” is eluding us, we panic. We feel helpless and hopeless. We worry about our adoptions, & our obligations, and whether we can really afford to give to the needy situation we hear about.
But MONEY is an illusion. A tool. Abstract. It is nothing but a number that causes us to worry, or causes us to rejoice. Sure, God works through using these numbers. And sometimes, so does Satan. The TRUTH is that GOD is our provider. HE is in control. We don’t NEED all that we think we need. We need Jesus. The end. That’s it. And if money keeps us from having full faith in Him, then let’s turn it around for His good! Instead of worshiping it, let’s give it away to His causes! Let’s have an attitude that shows that, sure, the world uses money as a medium of exchange, (and we do too,) but any true VALUE comes from our Lord! We seek God’s kingdom first, and He’ll make sure we’re fed in the end!
And then, let us hear God’s word clearly, without being muffled by the shouted lies that come from deceitful wealth! Don’t you want God to make you 30, 60, or even 100 times more fruitful??
“Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop — thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.” Mark 4:20
